iheartfaces | Furry Faces

During Thanksgiving break, our family took a little excursion through the Blue Ridge Mountains up to North Carolina. It never seems to matter what our final destination is, any stop to visit animals turns out to be the highlight! This silly Texas Longhorn at The Dillard House in North Georgia proved to be great entertainment! His Pavlovian conditioning was evident as he stuck out his very loooong tongue every time someone got near, just waiting for a handful of corn!

iheartfaces | On Your Feet

I call this the Yao Ming pose. It's my favorite way to capture Samuel now that he's pushing six feet tall and his foot has sprouted to a size 13 shoe.  Despite his menacing stance, he's actually a very nice young man. I demonstrate his kindness here with my motherly, unfailing trust!  (See?  He's really not going to stomp my lens!)

Football season has morphed into basketball games.  Shooting hoops in the driveway is his favorite place to be.

iheartfaces | Bust a Gut

No, we're not busting a gut because we ate too much (although this picture was taken on Thanksgiving Day), we're busting a gut because these two sisters live in the land of sillydom.  Just ignore the fact that they are in their Thanksgiving dresses on the property of The Biltmore Estate (i.e. the largest single family dwelling in the United States built by George Vanderbilt).  Just ignore the formal gardens and the majestic architecture.  After tackling her older sister to the ground, Ella and Arielle proceeded to roll all the way down that loooong hill!  Do you think the Vanderbilts mind?

iheartfaces | Autumn Splendor

Leaves flitter like birds
Flying colors through the air
Soar through life with me.

iheartfaces | Black

When I heard that the photo challenge theme this week was black, I wasn't thrilled. Black is sad. I like  happy. Black is scary. I like kind.  Blame it on my Scandinavian heritage if you will, but it's in my blood to crave light. I just wasn't inspired by black.

Fast forward to yesterday, when my (not-so) meticulous calendar failed me and we showed up for ballet pictures on the wrong day.  Not wanting to waste a perfectly good ballet bun, I decided to embrace the light and use black as the negative space.  This black is introspective and calm.  Who knew that black and light went together so well?

iheartfaces | Let Them Be Little

After 14 years of raising pre-schoolers, it was hard for me to fathom that I no longer had any children that qualified for this week's photo challenge!  This beautiful little girl was on loan to me for a few precious moments in the pumpkin patch.  She is our pastor's granddaughter, Emmy.

iheartfaces | Tickled Pink

If you're seven, Pink stands for Pink Hello Kitty! Boots, Pinkerella, and "Pink"tails! If you're thirty-seven (and holding) Pink stands for Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October.  To view more pinkalicious photos in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, head over to I Heart Faces!

iheartfaces | Summer Wrap Up

Although the temperature still reaches into the 80's, we've officially reached summer's end.  Even though the neighborhood pool is officially closed, I often reflect back on this picture of Arielle. There's something I love about the way the water is frozen in time.  There's something about her peacefulness, despite the storm around her.  It speaks to me.  She's grounded in what truly matters.

iheartfaces | Touch of Sun

She loves to play at the park.  She's content to be by herself while everyone else is loud and boisterous and wild. Dinner cooks in the orange pail. Toes anticipate the cool, white sand.

iheartfaces | White

White.
Perhaps my favorite color.
Clean.  Simple.  Full of possibilities.
Looking for shells on a white sandy beach.

iheartfaces | Pets

Nana wasn't looking for a cat.  She had a big black lab named Lucky.  One pet was enough.  She didn't need any more.  But this cat just showed up.  He wandered around the yard for a couple of years.  Nana watched the cat from her kitchen window when she was washing the dishes or drinking her coffee.  "He must be a neighbor's cat," thought Nana. "The cat must go home at night. It probably has a nice home."

Then she noticed him sleeping under the car in the driveway or under the evergreen in her back yard. Nana started putting water out on the deck and throwing dinner scraps under the evergreen.  Nobody seemed to know whose cat it was. She called him Goldie because of his soft golden fur and for the mascot of her favorite team, The Golden Gophers.

One day, when Nana opened the door for Lucky, the cat followed him in.  That was the day that Goldie decided to make the adoption official.  While Nana feared he had been abused because he lacked a tail, it was confirmed that Goldie was actually a Manx - a highly prized breed known for its hunting skills.  Once he took up residence, Goldie brought Nana a gift everyday: mouse, a mole, a chipmunk, and heaven forbid a bird.  These were the daily gifts of gratitude that Nana found on her doorstep. Gifts to demonstrate his affection and as payment for room and board. One day, Goldie was spotted struggling up the hill with something quite large. When he finally reached the house, Nana found at her doorstep a beautiful branch filled with bright red berries.  She put the branch in a vase and cherished the thoughtful gesture.

I think Goldie is thinking about how fortunate he is to have found such a loving owner. It's been said that, due to their independent nature, you can't really adopt a cat. Sometimes, however, a cat can adopt you.

iheartfaces | Beautiful Eyes

When I saw that the theme for this week's photo challenge was "Beautiful Eyes", I knew that any one of the photos I had taken of my nephew, Elias, this summer would qualify. His eyes are so blue, you could just dive right into them. I took this photo while the girls were busy with a lemonade stand and Elias was showing me the new bike he had just received for his 6th birthday. Although I'm a black and white girl at heart, I love how the primary colors speak to his boyishness. For more beautiful eye photos, visit I Heart Faces!

iheartfaces | Friendship

Friendships.  The heart of a true friend can be difficult to capture on film.  A friend is someone who loves you for who are and loves you in spite of who you are.  A friend listens when you just need to talk.    A friend sits with you in silence when words just can't be spoken.  A friend encourages.  A friend inspires.  Sometimes a friend volunteers you to make 400 cupcakes, because she knows you can do it!

I took this picture a few weeks ago while we were up in Minnesota.  Although they live a thousand miles apart, Arielle and her "twin" cousin, Brita, will always be friends.  They giggle, they laugh, they whisper secrets, they run and play.  Thanks to modern technology, they manage to talk for hours on the phone!

When I was young, I had a twin cousin, too.  We had the same last name, we lived on the same street, we went to the same summer camps, and in High School, thanks to alphabetized lockers, we saw each other every day.  Although we now live thousands of miles apart, in different countries even, I still look forward to our brief annual visits at the cabin.  A true friend is not a friend of the present.  A true friend is  a friend of the heart.

iheartfaces | Water

Our time visiting family is nearing an end.  It's hard to believe we've been gone almost five weeks!  I guess it's a good thing when one leaves, still wanting more.  Today we spent our last day with the cousins in their new pool.  My very talented 8-year old niece, Brita, snapped this photo of Anna with her new, underwater camera.  I loved it!  I did some minor editing with my very limited iPhoto software.  I loved how the black and white version showed so much more detail in the bubbles and water reflections.  What can I say, Brita, those photographic genes just run in the family! :-)

iheartfaces | Props

We are spending part of the summer up at Grandma and Grandpa's house this year, and wouldn't you know it, just a block from their house is this beautiful historic barn.  I've always known that the barn was there, but it's only been this past year, when I started participating in the I Heart Faces challenges, that I have truly come to recognize its beauty!  Now, I'm just in love with red barns.  I think I need to buy one.  Or live next door to one.

I brought the girls to the barn recently and took a few pictures with these polka-dotted balloons.  This one, in particular, amused me.  Something about her impish grin and the way the balloon is half-covering her sister's face.  Somehow, even in all their innocence, they know exactly what they are doing, don't they?

iheartfaces | Red, White and Blue!

My selections for this week's I Heart Faces photo challenge are all about the cousins!

We, sadly, live far away from them, so when we can, we spend every single minute with them!

Aren't they adorable?

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

iheartfaces | A Touch of Whimsy

With three little girls at home, the theme of "A Touch of Whimsy" made for a super fun week!  In this photo we went for the whimsy of pattern and maybe the irony that there has been no need for  an umbrella in the sunny, 95 degree heat for many, many weeks!  I can't wait to get more whimsical ideas this week at I Heart Faces! :-)

iheartfaces | My Boys

I'm married to Superman.  It's true.  Always on call.  Always coming to my rescue when life gets tough.  From diaper changer to coach, he's been there every step of the way.  He encourages  and challenges, disciplines and loves.  And did I mention?  This man of steel can still pull off the red cape and tights! :-)

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

iheartfaces | Bright and Vivid

From May to September the thermometer exceeds 90 degrees.
Down here in The South, we do the only thing we can .......
sit in the shade, sip sweet tea and bring our kids to the pool!

iheartfaces | From A Distance

The annual ballet recital.  It's long, it's formal, it's momentous.  It's a year's worth of preparation for  three minutes on stage.  What's more fun?  Putting on the fairy dresses and running through the park.  No makeup, no ballet bun, no tights.  Just happy, barefooted bliss.
