In honor of my fifth grader's birthday, I thought these cute Wise Owl Cupcakes would be perfect to bring in during lunch!  I found this smart idea in one of my favorite cupcake books, Hello, Cupcake! by Karen Tack and Allen Richardson.  You can find the book HERE!

Start with a chocolate cupcake baked in a brown wrapper.

Top with chocolate frosting.

With a serrated knife, cut the chocolate part of an Oreo in thirds.

For the owl ears, place round sides facing toward the center like this.

Use the frosted side of the Oreos for two big eyes!

Pipe chocolate icing on the ears and then add "Feathers" above the eyes.

Add two Junior Mint eyes and a Runt Banana nose.

Oreo Turkeys

Halloween has come and gone, but the candy still lingers.  These turkeys are our favorite Thanksgiving treat and a great way to use up all that candy corn!

Did I mention that Arielle won the Candy Corn Estimating contest?

Way to go, honey!

STEP #1

• Do everything in assembly line fashion.
• Lay out all the Oreos (I use double stuffed) on a Silpat mat or parchment paper.
• Melt about 8 ounces of chocolate in a Gallon sized Ziploc bag.
• Snip the corner 1/4" or less.  This bag will be used for piping chocolate "glue."

STEP #2

• Put a dime-sized dot of chocolate on the lower center part of the Oreo.
• Working quickly, place one Whopper on the chocolate spot of "Glue."

STEP #3

• Working 3 or 4 Oreos at a time, pipe on chocolate to the remaining top portion of the Oreo.
• Add five Candy Corn "feathers".  The largest Candy Corn should be in the center.

STEP #4

• Put a dot of chocolate on top of each Whopper.
• Attach a Candy Corn head.
• Using "Writing Icing" (Not Gel), dot two blue eyes and a red "wattle"  (Or is it the Snood?) to the head and let dry.

Enjoy!  These are actually quite tasty.  They have become a Thanksgiving tradition at our house and grace our Thanksgiving table right along with the pumpkin pie!

Halloween Recap

 

Here's one thing The South has over The North:

When it comes to Halloween, no linebacker princesses!

 (i.e. extra large princess costumes on top of puffy down coats!)

Of course, when the Hubby goes all out for the Best Costume Award, 

there's nothing cooling him down, either!

I, on the other hand, sacrifice a recycled costume in exchange for NEW BOOTS!

It is Red RIDING Hood, after all!

I love our neighborhood tradition of gathering for appetizers before the Trick-or-Treating begins.

There's always something for everyone!

As it turns out, some of the kids don't even need costumes.

They've grown so fast......

  they're nearly unrecognizable!

So stop growing up.

I love you just the way you are.

 I want nothing more than to hold your hand .....

..... just a little bit longer.

BOO Bags with FREE Printables!

BOO-ing is a custom that was unfamiliar to me until I moved to The South.  It's basically a cross between the May Day Basket and Ding Dong Ditch.  I'm not sure who originally thought of this, but it was probably the same person that first invited Santa's Elves to come and live with them before Christmas.  I'm just saying.

The Boo cycle starts sometime in October.  The Boo-er puts together a bag of candy, leaves it at the door of the recipient, rings the bell and runs.  Under the strictest of guidelines, each house in a neighborhood should be Boo-ed only once and should hang a sign on their door stating they have already been Boo-ed.  After you have been Boo-ed, it is then your job to Boo two other neighbors until the entire neighborhood has been Boo-ed.

Go for the cute factor, not the candy factor.
